Thomasville family starts mission trip for NC residents affected by Hurricane Helene

In the southern city of Thomasville, Georgia, a local family is embarking on a mission of hope and support, destined for Boone, North Carolina, a city severely affected by Hurricane Helene. Feeling the gravity of the devastation, this family generously opened their hearts and started collecting essentials to donate to the hurricane victims.

Initially, their humble endeavor sprouted from a simple Facebook post appealing to the people of South Georgia for donations. Their call was answered with a deluge of support, even from far-off corners like Brunswick. The response was so large that the family quickly found themselves in need of additional hands on deck to help transport the items.

At the heart of this mission is Jonathan Cannon, an organizer and volunteer, whose initial outreach initiative has become nothing short of a full-time job. Unsurprisingly, the community response was overwhelming. Cannon confessed to expecting a significant amount of donations, but the outpouring of help has exceeded his expectations.

In this mission, the Cannon family joins hands with the non-profit organization, Samaritan’s Purse. The combined efforts are aimed towards the collection of an assortment of necessary items like canned food, batteries, feminie hygiene products, baby essentials, and clothes to provide for those affected in North Carolina.

Emphasizing the areas of greatest need, Emily Cannon, another participating family member, expressed the urgency for more donations of baby items. “There is a critical requirement of supplies like diapers, baby formula, wipes, and bottles,” she remarked. Another desperate request was for unusual items such as insect repellent, Benadryl and even bleach.

Remembering the harrowing images of the destruction unleashed by the hurricane, Emily confessed that it was the sight of an annihilated city that nudged her resolve to step up and offer her help. She deeply empathized with their pain, saying, “I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now, they have lost everything, and they have nothing. I just wanted to help send them any and everything that I possibly could.”

The Cannon family, initially expecting to simply support the mission, now finds themselves in the position of strategizing and coordinating substantial donations. They’re making their business a drop-off point for receiving more donations, a task that they’ve embraced with open arms. Their generosity and community spirit sparked a wave of additional donations – from dog food to pallets of water, courtesy of Pepsi.

This outpouring of community support has resulted in the Cannons having accumulated enough donations to fill four trailers with goods to transport, and still, more donations keep coming in. Recognizing that they cannot manage this herculean task on their own, they’re extending an invitation for more volunteers to join the mission. They’re particularly in search of individuals willing to donate their time as well as the use of their trailers, encouraging interested individuals to come forward to Cannon’s Classic Cleaners in Thomasville.

Through their arduous efforts and unwavering commitment, the Cannon family is demonstrating the strength of community spirit and the power of persistence. Their actions are a reminder that in times of tragedy and loss, a helping hand can make all the difference.
