Basketball enthusiasts will experience a fresh atmosphere during matches in Allen Fieldhouse, as it opens its doors after an extensive $50 million renovation meant to enhance the fan experience in time for the 70th basketball season. While the historic venue was always known for its exceptional on-court talent, there was room for improvement in elevating the game-watching experience for fans.
According to University of Kansas Athletic Director, Travis Goff, they were clear in their vision from the beginning. Their goal was to give every fan and every player a unique experience, making Allen Fieldhouse the best basketball building globally. This, in turn, would solidify the venue’s standing as the top-most basketball facility.
The renovation has brought about many noticeable changes. Fans can expect new, larger screens that take the place of the old benches in the third level. The screens, nearly 14 feet tall, 24 feet wide, will also display closed captions for fans, adding an inclusive element to the viewing experience.
The venue saw the opportunity to adapt while upholding traditions. Recognizing that the third-level corner space needed transformation and modernization, they decided to open it, bring in more natural light, and add much-needed comfort by introducing more restrooms and concession stands. The refurbished area was greeted by many as a stark contrast from the previous cramped, dimly lit area with giant machinery looming overhead.
The overall seating capacity has played a significant role in the renovation. The traditional seating arrangement has been reshuffled, and extra space now exists behind the hoops, allowing students to be as close to the floor as possible to wave the wheat. Additionally, ADA seating throughout the venue has been doubled, providing greater inclusivity. Furthermore, 1,100 chairback seats have been added on the west side, resulting in an increased seating capacity to 15,300.
To ensure a comfortable experience for each individual, corridors have been widened so fans can easily move to and from their new seats, making it a walk in the park compared to the past where maneuvering through the narrow passageways was cumbersome.
The renovation brings more than just structural changes. It encompasses the addition of a state-of-the-art sound system that will excite the fans more than ever. Further, each restroom is updated with the latest amenities. The north end now has a new elevator, adding convenience to guests. A notable addition is the Crimson Club, connecting directly to the second-level concourse, making it a hub for socializing during breaks. The first-ever on-site cooking kitchen managed by the renowned hospitality partner, OVG, is bound to satisfy the fans’ cravings. Modernized entrances at the Wagnon Student-Athlete Center and more Rally House stores have been added to offer fans numerous options to purchase merchandise.
It is imperative to mention that the first game in the newly renovated Allen Fieldhouse will see the men’s team face off against Washburn. The Athletic Department hopes that the transformation in the building and facilities will evoke a strong positive response from fans in person and bring about an exciting change in the overall experience of the games moving forward.
