Barbara J. Raddatz, nee Gow, a prominent figure from South Minneapolis, drew her last breath peacefully on October 3, 2024. Born on August 10, 1932, Barbara left a profound legacy and an indelible mark on the lives of those she met. Her cherished memories live on in the hearts of her beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and a multitude of close friends. Barbara was mourned not only by her immediate family and friends, but also by the larger community that came to know her through her endeavors and passions.
Preceded in death by her husband, John L. Raddatz, and her brothers, John and Harold Gow, Barbara navigated much of her life’s journey on her own. As a person, she was independent and resilient, yet full of warmth and compassion for others. These qualities were well-reflected in the different personal and professional roles she fulfilled during her lifetime.
Barbara dedicated a significant portion of her life to working at a major newspaper company as an administrative assistant to the CEO. Much-admired for her efficiency, professionalism, and impeccable sense of organization, Barbara made a considerable contribution to the smooth functioning and operations of the newspaper group. Her work had a wider reach and impact, extending the realm of effective communication and information dissemination to the various readers of the paper.
However, work was just one aspect of her vibrant life. Barbara had a range of hobbies and interests outside her professional sphere. She displayed a keen interest in traveling and literature, which justifies her extensive travel experiences around the world and her profound love for reading.
Moreover, she was known for her support for cultural organizations, with Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and her church being particular beneficiaries of her patronage. Barbara genuinely loved entertaining and making desserts, revealing the nurturer in her who relished the joy of giving. Her fondness for baking revealed a creative and dexterous side to her personality that those around her admired and relished literally!
Art and aesthetics found a special place in Barbara’s life. She was a staunch supporter of various museums, firmly believing in the power of art as a form of expression and a reflector of society. Known also for being an excellent seamstress and knitter, her meticulous stitching and impressive knits showcased her finesse and dedication.
As Barbara bid her final goodbye to the world, the community would remember her for her love and benevolence. She would be honored for her contribution to the fields of art and communication, and appreciated for nurturing the inherent human qualities of compassion, giving, and love. To celebrate her extraordinary journey, a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, located at 4557 Colfax Avenue, South Minneapolis.
