Boy, 7, Teaches Himself How to Lay Flooring for Family’s DIY Home Renovation — and Taught Mom, Too (Exclusive)

In the midst of a do-it-yourself (DIY) home renovation project, a video taken by Heather Beck showcasing her 7-year-old son, Abel Beck, participating in the process has recently gone viral on TikTok. Heather is a mother of two sons, Abel and Hayden, aged 13. The family decided to embark on a DIY journey to set up their new home from installing floors to hanging drywall and tiling walls. They aspire to accomplish this without incurring any debt to finance the renovations.

Heather’s post on TikTok captured Abel’s determined and successful efforts in installing flooring in their new home. This video post garnered a massive audience with over 37.3 million views and 4.4 million likes on the app. His skillful craftsmanship did not go unnoticed, earning praising comments from various viewers.

The video starts with Abel working on the flooring and his father, Weston Beck, joining him halfway through. The sight of a 7-year-old focusing on his task led to speculation about whether it was safe and appropriate for him to be doing this unsupervised. Heather confirmed that she was close by during the installation, working on the bathroom.

“He’s not alone,” she said. “Whenever we go to work on the house, whatever task needs doing, we all pitch in and get as much done as we can. Abel wanted to help like everyone else, hence the mastery of installing flooring.”

Contrary to what one might expect, Abel learned how to set the wood panels into place himself, and it only took him about 20 to 30 minutes. He likely picked this up by observing his father. But that’s not all. Heather brought up that Abel has also mastered handling a variety of tools and can help with plumbing and painting projects, apart from tiling showers and backsplashes, hanging drywall, and setting up electrical outlets.

Picture a 7-year-old painting the walls of their new home and diligently working alongside his 13-year-old brother, Hayden. Despite not being professional contractors, the Beck family, united on this DIY journey, is managing to make real progress on their home renovation. According to Heather, this is the third house they’ve worked on together, a testament to their determination and unity.

“My husband has always been a DIY type of guy,” she shared. “He’s very smart and quite good at figuring out new skills and methods.”

Apart from their tireless work and clear progress, the family’s efforts are tied to their resolution to become debt-free in the upcoming years. This dream led them to sell their 3,000-sq.-ft. home and acquire what’s described as a “fixer-upper 90s home.” Heather confirmed that they have no plans to borrow money for their house renovation plan.

As she sees it, moving to a smaller home is not a difficulty, but a chance to become “more present in each others’ lives” and spend more time together as a family. She expressed her gratitude for having her sons help make their new residence special. The journey appears to be challenging and stressful, but Heather sees it as “a temporary solution for a much happier long-term goal.”

“Through these activities, we all get to learn how to do new things,” she added. “When my children grow up, they will be able to handle and fix things themselves. I want them to lead a debt-free life as well.” Their journey can certainly be seen as a heartwarming example of a family working together to achieve their dreams.
