Last week, a group of 12 courageous individuals from Staunton, Virginia, undertook a relief mission to North Carolina, responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. Upon their return, they revealed to their community the shocking magnitude of the destruction caused by the storm.
Upon witnessing the devastation, Page Hearn, the mission’s coordinator, commented on the heartbreaking reality of the situation. She noted the healing impact of the disaster on her faith in humanity. Americans, she observed, when confronted with such catastrophes, rally together to extend a helping hand to those who are in dire need.
Despite her past experiences in hurricane relief missions and overseas work, Hearn confessed that she was taken aback by the scale of the destruction that Hurricane Helene had left behind. The sight was unlike anything she or anyone had ever witnessed on American soil.
The team spent a significant amount of time in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. When they returned to Virginia, they shared harrowing accounts of what they had seen – over one hundred people missing, children’s footwear hanging from trees, and the overwhelming stench of decay. The pain of witnessing such desolation was profound; yet, it was not at the level Hearn had anticipated.
Hearn interacted with the survivors, offering solace and aid however she could. Each day she and her team managed to assist between 300 and 500 people while distributing supplies. Despite her preparedness and the goal of the mission, Hearn was taken aback by the magnitude of the disaster.
Despite the emotional turmoil, she pressed on, driven by determination, adrenaline, and sheer focus. She acknowledged the immense need of the survivors, suppressing her emotions and making their well-being a priority. Once back home, she admitted the overwhelming impact that finally set in as she discussed the mission with her husband.
The dedication of her team did not go unnoticed by Hearn, who expressed gratitude for their efforts and the significant impact they had on the community of Spruce Pine. She praised the team’s seamless cooperation in achieving what they did during their time in North Carolina.
Bentley Shifflett, a member of the team, celebrated her 21st birthday amid the tough mission. She expressed the fulfillment obtained from helping others, especially in their time of need. Shifflett stressed the importance of such tasks given the immediate need despite the millions of dollars uncle Sam had directed towards the cause.
Following their return and once they regained access to cellphone reception, Hearn was astounded by the massive support from the community. Even after their initial supply drive, the community had donated even more supplies, reaffirming Hearn’s faith in humanity.
Hearn intends to make weekly trips back to the area as long as there is a need for support, with the next trip scheduled for the coming Monday. The committed coordinator also added that the gym would remain open to anyone willing to contribute to their cause.
