As we approach the school holidays this October, it’s important to remember how to keep our outdoor activities both enjoyable and safe while ensuring the holidays remain memorable for the right reasons.
Recent research has shown a startling statistic in regards to public safety, stating that less than one-fourth, or 23%, of the UK population are aware of the presence of power lines when participating in outdoor activities. This can include common fan-favourites such as camping, fishing, kite flying and drone usage. Familiarity with outdoor locations isn’t always sufficient to guarantee safety, making this statistic alarmingly significant. Activities that form the core of many family holidays can unfortunately turn hazardous due to the lack of amidst knowledge regarding power lines in the area.
Given the situation, it’s crucial to relay some important safety tips and practice a little caution to make certain that outdoor activities remain innocuous and harmless. We need to safely navigate the power line landscape and to do this, adhering to precautions and keeping the tips in mind is the key to ensure safety this school holiday season.
First and foremost, remember to stay clear of overhead power lines when pitching a tent or caravan. This might seem obvious, but it’s important to take a precautionary approach and assume all power lines are live. Don’t choose to camp directly under or near power lines. While an open sky might make the location seem ideal for camping, being underneath a power line significantly amplifies the risk factor.
Water activities also involve certain precautions due to the presence of overhead power lines. If you’ve chosen a fishing spot or a location for water sports that is near power lines, try to relocate elsewhere, if possible. If that’s not an option, it is essential to maintain a safe distance, at least 30m, and handle fishing rods with care, aiming away from the lines.
Setting fires or lighting BBQs beneath power lines is another dangerous activity that should be avoided at all costs. Additionally, when handling tent poles, ladders or other long objects near power lines, carry them horizontally and at a low-level. This would significantly reduce the possibility of accidental contact with the power lines.
Moreover, avoid playing ball games, kite flying or drone flying near substations and overhead lines. Never try to retrieve lost items from substation enclosures, as they are installed for safety reasons.
In case of an electrical network emergency, you should call the free national 105 number immediately. If anyone gets injured, remember to call 999 for medical aid without delay.
Staying aware and keeping these top safety tips in mind can help us ensure a safe and enjoyable time outdoors during the school holidays. Derek Bell, the Health and Safety Director, highlights the importance of these safety measures stating, “Our goal is to ensure that everyone can have fun while remaining safe during this October break. These recommendations which might seem like common-sense, are often overlooked. However, taking these precautions now can prevent serious complications later.”
By listening to the experts and following these simple guidelines, we can help in preventing accidents and truly make the most out of our outdoors.
