The summer of 2025 presents an exciting opportunity for City College students as the institution rolls out plans for three unique study abroad programs. The attractive locations for these study excursions include cultural and historical hotspots such as Sicily in Italy, Tokyo in Japan, and a trio of delightful European locations: Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.
The Sicilian summer promises an unforgettable mix of education and entertainment for students with a detailed exploration of human geography and natural history on the menu. In Sicily’s Syracuse, students can look forward to an array of events tailor-made to provide a deep understanding of the island’s geographical processes and rich culture. As a part of this program, participants will not just read about the history and culture of Sicily but also get to live it themselves from the comfort of various picturesque Sicilian locations.
Syracuse sets the stage for a unique learning experience that offers not only classroom learning but also hands-on encounters with diverse landscapes, local farmers’ markets, immersive snorkeling, and hiking trips. The program includes a visit to Mount Etna in Catania, Sicily’s highest volcano, making it a perfect stage for students to learn about the island’s natural history. A foray into Sicilian cuisine will add a delicious dash of variety to the student’s palette every week.
Over in Tokyo, City College students have the chance to study small group communications and intercultural communications. Tokyo, known as a hub of modern civilization with cutting-edge technology, offers students a rich cultural heritage and an insight into the traditional Japanese way of life. The comprehensive summer program offers group excursions, an intimate tea ceremony experience where students get the opportunity of making matcha tea, thus encouraging cultural appreciation.
Walking through Tokyo’s busy Shinjuku or Shibuya, students may be surprised to find the peacefulness of a small forest, a beautiful garden, a shrine, or a temple. This amalgamation of the modern and the traditional will allow students to understand that culture doesn’t have to change drastically, for they can retain their cultural values.
Last, but not least, is the unique program set to take place in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. Tailored for those who have an interest in science, technology, and art, this program doesn’t require students to be experts. The program aims to engage students in studio art under the guidance of Art Professor Stephanie Dotson.
Students will have the opportunity to network with other artists and get hands-on experience with different art mediums. They will be exposed to different art studios in Berlin and explore a variety of museums. Students will also have a chance to take part in a GPS assignment that encourages them to explore their surroundings and map their unique trajectories through these exciting European locales.
To sum it up, these study abroad programs by City College offer students a perfect blend of learning and discovery. Be it geography, art, culture, science, or technology, the summer of 2025 presents an opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
