Potter Elementary School located in Flint has undergone a transformation that brings promise of better times ahead. It’s not the same as it used to be. In a massive undertaking that saw an expense of $11 million, the establishment has received a total makeover. The investment is a positive stride towards securing a brighter future for the students of Flint.
In past years, the Flint school system has grappled with numerous issues including outdated infrastructure, inadequate resources, and low academic grades. All these factors have tarnished the reputation of the schools. However, the recent renovation in Potter Elementary School signals a new beginning. The initiative is part of a broader plan by the district aimed at investing in student-oriented learning spaces, marking a significant shift in the narrative.
The remodeled 64,915 square-foot elementary school now boasts modern classrooms, advanced facilities, and enhanced technology. These refurbishments are designed to foster a caring and conducive environment for learning, aimed at promoting both social and academic growth for the students. School officials are optimistic that by focusing on the needs of students and upgrading infrastructure, they can neutralize the existing stigma linked to Flint schools.
Potter Elementary principal Gretchen Shafer believes the new equipment, curriculum, and technology, similar to other counties, will make the students feel valued and significant. The implementation of an improved security protocol, addition of a conference room, kitchen, a principle’s office, and two bathrooms on the first floor, new doors, floors, paint, an engagement room, as well as an auditorium mark the infrastructural upgrades.
One striking highlight of the remodeled school is the state-of-the-art media center. Here, students can explore a world of educational experiences with Oculus VR devices, design and create using 3D printers, and even indulge in e-sports. Gamified learning platforms, such as Adventure Academy and Adventure Math, add a touch of fun and entertainment to the learning process.
According to Kristyn Mockles, the media technology specialist at Potter Elementary, teachers can utilize resources such as Class VR to provide virtual experiences to students. From visiting a digital museum to examining a human body part virtually, the possibilities offered by this technology are abundant.
The renovated school library, now brimming with a varied selection of books, is a significant part of the new face of the school. Moreover, the students now have the luxury of choosing from different types of desks as seating options which include couches, stools, and floor pillows.
The school takes pride in its literacy-focused approach. Bridgett Jones, the district’s communication specialist, said, “we ensure that our kids take books home and have diverse libraries at home in different languages catering to all the students.”
The school currently has approximately 230 students incorporating different age groups, from early childhood development to pre-k to K-6. A highlight is the head start program, which is a partnership between GISD school district and the Flint Schools. Intriguingly, the instructor attended kindergarten in the same room where she now teaches.
The upgraded gym, adorned with a Flint logo at the center court, dark blue walls, back-corner lockers, a scoreboard, and six basketball hoops, is another focus of the renovated school’s modernization. The inclusion of the logo serves as a symbol of unity. As such, Potter Elementary School is poised for a bright future, armed with a fresh aesthetic, modern resources, and a focused vision for student success.
